Early in October, 1943, troops of the Fifth Army entered the city of Naples which thus became the first major city on the continent of Europe to be liberated from the German yoke.  Naples had been sacked and gutted by the retreating enemy, in addition to being thoroughly bombed along the waterfront.  Many of her finest churches, including Santa Chiara, are in ruins, and it will be many years before life has returned to normal.
